The Bunko Babes

The Bunko Babes by Leah Starr Baker

No man is an island and women aren't either. As women, we surround ourselves with others. Some friends make us feel needed. Other friends inspire us to new heights. Still other friends are our rebellious outlets. Other friends seem perfect in every way. All in all, we gather together our own community of peers and supports to feel whole and connected.

When trying to sum up Bunko Babes, I could talk about Rebecca Thornton and her cast of crazy loved ones. I could talk about her best friend since childhood, Jessica and her desire to have a baby but a secret from her past is rearing its ugly head and preventing that dream. I could talk about Madison and her pursuit towards looking like perfection while learning that a young baby definitely throws a wrench into those works. If only she could lose the cardigan . . . Then there's Madison and Kitty Kat and Autumn and many more women in Rebecca's life that surround her with love and acceptance.

To simply talk about the many people is to do a disservice to The Bunko Babes. The true story is about friendships. The true story is about finding dignity in your circumstances and the strength to persevere and beat the odds. Like in real life, everyone has baggage. Like in real life, everyone is just trying to do the best they can with what they have. Like in real life, sometimes you succeed, sometimes you fail. Most importantly, like in real life, the people you surround yourself with are a big part of where you find your strength to get out of bed each day.

The Bunko Babes is not simply a fictional story about some woman. The Bunko Babes is a celebration of life and friendship. The Bunko babes made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me call my girlfriends and thank them for putting up with me! This is a must read!
